There is no denying that the New York Jets need an upgrade when it comes to their receiving core, and with talk that they might cut Santonio Holmes this off-season the need is even greater. Many draft pundits have Gang Green taking a receiver with the 18th overall pick, but one has them going even further with it.
NFL Network’s draft expert Mike Mayock thinks the Jets might pick up multiple receivers come draft day.
“I mean they need some talent out there,” Mayock said on a conference call Tuesday. “And I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Jets picked multiple wide receivers this year.”
Who does Mayock have in mind for the Jets, well he made mention of Texas A&M standout Mike Evans, USC’s Marqise Lee and FSU’s Kelvin Benjamin as three possible options at 18. All three men have the possibility of being standout receivers in the NFL, but would they fit in with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg’s style?
Mornhinweg himself talked about the key intangibles that he looks for in receivers on the teams’ website and he emphasized being able to beat bump and run coverage.
“The second-most important thing is defeating bump and run,” Mornhinweg told Jets Talk Live. “That’s so much different than the college game. We’re watching some college receivers…they rarely get the bump and run.”
It will interesting to see what the Jets plan to do with the 18th overall pick come May 8 at Radio City Music Hall.
