The Jets’ run game has to be very consistent and efficient if Rex Ryan wants to go to the Super Bowl.
Rex Ryan’s “ground and pound” game has been fluctuating throughout the eight weeks this NFL season, however the run game must stay consistent. RB Chris Ivory recorded 107 yards against the Patriots that essentially helped them win. But the week before that both RB’s combined for a total of 59 yards against a 19th ranked Steelers’ defense. A few weeks ago RB Bilal Powell recorded 149 yards against Buffalo that led them to a win. So what does this mean?
In 2009, the Jets were 1st in the league in running the ball and went to the championship, in 2010 they were 4th in the league and went to the championship, in 2011 they were 22nd in the league and missed the playoffs, in 2012 they were 12th in the league and missed the playoffs once again.
As the years went on the numbers have gotten worse than the 2009 and 2010 season.
The main reason on why the Jets brought in Chris Ivory from NO, was so that he could provide more endzone TD’s and to keep this offense moving fluently. Not only Chris Ivory, but the Jets saw the emergence of Bilal Powell last season which made them keep him on the team and move in a new direction as far as offensive coordinators after stints with Brian Schottenheimer and Tony Sporano. John Idzik and management knew that Marty Morhinweg had a system to incorporate the run game in his new “west coast offense.”
If the Jets hope to make it back to the playoffs, they need to make sure that run game is coming in each week with a mission that hopefully puts them in the top five in rushing by the end of the season although, the Jets are not that far from accomplishing that, now that they’re 11th in the league.
